Dean was born and raised in Cherokee County. Raised by a Vietnam veteran, Dean understood at a young age the importance of sacrifice and service.

Dean enlisted as an infantryman in the South Carolina Army National Guard at the age of 17. He later attended Officer Candidate School where he received a commission as an infantry officer in the United States Army and served continuously for over 20 years on active duty or in a reserve capacity. Dean retired from military service in 2002 after deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He returned from retirement to active service in late 2006 and deployed in early 2007 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Dean led a small unit of military advisers in Kandahar, Afghanistan until mid-2008.

Dean began his career in law enforcement at South Carolina Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He then worked as a Task Force Officer with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Greenville, South Carolina for approximately 6 years. During Dean’s time as a task force officer, he spent a year and a half assigned to the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force in Greenville. Dean finished his law enforcement career at the United States Probation Office retiring in 2017.

Dean was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Bronze Star Medal for Valor, and Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service while conducting combat operations against the Taliban and Al Qaeda forces. He retired from military service in 2010. He was inducted into the Cherokee County Hall of Bravery in 2010 for his actions in Afghanistan and he is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

Dean graduated from Blacksburg High School and later Spartanburg Methodist College with an associate degree in criminal justice. He received his bachelor’s degree from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia and his Juris Doctorate from the Charlotte School of Law.

Dean is currently a partner at Pruett and Cook Law Firm in Gaffney. Dean and his wife, Allison, live in Gaffney. Dean has has three children and one grandchild.
